The mobile Web is killing gatekeepers

  • By Alan Knott-Craig

Newspaper paywalls don’t work because you can Google the article and go directly to the source.

Advertising on the mobile Web doesn’t work because the phone screen is too small to fit in 30 banners selling everything from online poker to insurance.

The Internet is taking us down a road where the gatekeepers are being made redundant. By “gatekeepers” I mean those that would charge for a service that you wouldn’t pay for if you had a choice.

If you can create something of value, and make it easy to pay online, you can make money on the mobile Web. For example: games on the AppStore.

If you happen to have built a business on the genius idea of paywalls for news, or selling banner ads via Google, you’re dead.
