What is legal is not always moral

  • By Alan Knott-Craig

You own a company that rents offices.

One day your offices go on the market, and you decide to buy the building.

Rather pay yourself rent.

That’s all good, except if the shareholders of the company are not the exact same shareholders of the building.

If there’s a difference in shareholding, you shouldn’t buy the building.

Why? Because, no matter what happens, you will ALWAYS be conflicted when deciding what the rent should be.

It’s totally legal, but it is not moral. Even if you disclose everything upfront, there will always be questions.

If you develop a reputation as a morally-questionable character, you can forget about ever building anything big.

Forget about legal. Ask yourself is it moral.
