Tips for finding a mentor

  • By Alan Knott-Craig

A mentor is useful.

He/she can help you avoid many unnecessary mistakes, and provide moral support when down in the dumps.

That said, finding a mentor is not easy.

If you’re not lucky enough to have an entrepreneurial parent or uncle or aunt or anyone near you, then follow these steps:

  1. Determine the specific area of your life for which you want a mentor.
  2. Create a list of potential mentors.
  3. Starting with the top, write down status of current relationship.
  4. Write down everything you know about the person.
  5. Research everything you can about the mentor.
  6. Do you know anyone they know?
  7. Prepare contact via phone or email.
  8. Make contact. (Nothing beats meeting in person)
  9. Follow up.
  10. Go to the next person on your list. Rinse repeat.
