Steer clear of envy

It’s tempting to look over the wall to see how your neighbor is doing. What kind of car he’s driving. How much money he’s making.

When you read the papers you start feeling like you’re falling behind your peers.

Envy can creep up on you before you know it, and BOOM! You become a slave.

Beware envy.

There are two kinds of envy: Inferiority and malicious.

Inferiority envy will make you work harder to catch up with those you perceive to be better off. It will make you chase other people’s goals.

Malicious envy will make you want to see others encounter misfortune, be cut down to size, be brought back to your level. It will make you harm other people.

Both will make you unhappy and distract you from your own dreams.

No good can come from constantly thinking that someone somewhere is doing better than you.

Keep your eye on your own ball, ignore the crowd.

“Envy is a really stupid sin because it’s the only one you could never possibly have any fun at. There’s a lot of pain and no fun. Why would you want to get on that trolley?” Charlie Munger
