A compass is more useful than a map

  • By Alan Knott-Craig

Don’t you sometimes wish you had a map for your startup? Some way to figure out how long it will take to achieve success, what obstacles lie ahead, where exactly your destination is?

That would be great, but that’s not how it works.

Startup-life is uncertain. No start-up’s journey is the same. There is no map.

What you need is a compass. Something to point you in the right direction, especially when you find a fork in the road.

Your compass is your ethical framework. Your values. Your rule-book that defines what is the “right thing to do.”

It can be as simple as: Don’t hurt people, tell the truth, stick to the law.

These rules become your compass which will keep you moving in the right direction.

These rules will make it easier to find your way in the dark.

Forget about the map.

Find your compass.
